AAF - Best Music Teacher

Young Pianist of the North invites entries for its tenth edition, taking place on 22 – 25 November 2017.

YPN is open to pianists of all nationalities under the age of 21, competing in four age groups. The competition features a national award winning educational programme. Masterclasses and individual feedback with the Jury are included in the entry fee (please see the Rules for details).

Nearly four hundred talented pianists from six continents and more than 40 countries of the world have been invited to perform on the YPN stage since its launch in 2008. Winners of some of the most prestigious contests such as Gina Bachauer, Hilton Head or Marguerite Long have played side by side with those for whom YPN was their first experience at an international level. Many winners of the title – Leonardo Colafelice (2011), Ellen Lee (2013), Robert Bily (2013) or Julian Trevelyan (2015), to name just a few, are now at the start of a promising professional career, performing in major concert halls and attracting brilliant reviews.

Information about YPN 2016 winners is published here.

Information about the previous winners is published here.

One of the goals of YPN is to ensure that every participant returns home as a winner, having gained something new – experience, inspiration, a valuable advice, a friend. The award-winning educational programme and individual feedback sessions with the Jury are a part and parcel of the event, promoting excellence in learning and teaching the piano.

The feedback and information received at YPN have helped many young musicians to make potentially life-changing choices about their further studies and professional career.

YPN accepts a limited number of candidates, and the volume of applications usually exceeds available places. Applications are considered as they arrive. Early entries are strongly advised in order to avoid disappointment.

As always, many contestants, their parents, teachers and the members of the public have written to us after YPN 2015, sharing their experiences and observations and sending their well wishes. Some accounts were of great length and very valuable on our quest to continuously improve YPN in order to meet the needs of young musicians in the best possible way.

Heartfelt thanks to everyone for taking time to write and for all the warm words!

Thank you for your email and organising such a great competition again this year. The 2015 YPN experience was immensely enjoyable. Everything was so professionally organised - from practice slots to consultations with the jury, from which I got some tremendously helpful feedback. The receptionists were always so lovely and enthusiastic in helping! It was also great to make new friends from around the world!
Our son was very happy and grateful to be one of the finalists of the competition. He had learnt and experienced a lot, and also had great time making friends. The staff were kind and friendly, the practice and rehearsal times were carefully planned. The feedback session with the Jury has greatly helped him to improve his playing, and he would certainly like to enter the competition again in future!
Thank you for the enormous effort of organising the competition and cultivating its growth. It was simply amazing to see the performances of many talented young pianists, totally enjoyable!
We were very impressed by the friendliness of the contestants. They were competitors, but they also were all fellow musicians and it was refreshing to see them reach out to each other and make those connections. The master classes were very helpful, there was a good amount of critique balanced kindly with praise. Thank you very much for the experience. Your caring and dedication to promoting the musicianship of young pianists is most evident and praiseworthy.
Thank you for a fulfilling week! My son had an amazing time performing, watching all the performances and master classes. It's a valuable experience for all of us.
YPN was fantastic, I had a great time and really got a lot from it this year, for various reasons. Thanks so much!
Thank you very much for organising the fantastic Young Pianist of the North International Piano Competition in Newcastle. My student thoroughly enjoyed himself and was delighted to perform. Also thank you and the jury members for providing constructive comments to help him with his performance. It was certainly a great opportunity and experience for him.
